Accessing Your Ocean Web Space with WinSCP

WinSCP is a graphical freeware SCP (Secure Copy) client for Windows. It securely connects to the Ocean server and allows the user to upload and download files via drag and drop interface.

Install and Set Up WinSCP

    1. First download WinSCP to your desktop from the WinSCP Web site.
    2. Once it's downloaded, minimize this window, double-click the installer, and click Next until the installation is complete.
    3. Launch the WinSCP by double-clicking the WinSCP executable.
    4. A WinSCP Login window will appear. Select New button on the right side.
    5. A blank session screen will appear. Enter the host name, your user name and Password. You do not need to change the Port number, and you do not need a Private key file. Be sure you select SFTP for the Protocol.

    6. Click the Save button at the bottom. In the "Save session as" windows, your default session name is shown, click OK to continue.

Visit the tutorial for changing the password.

Prepare your Web directory on Ocean

Before creating your Web pages and uploading them to the Ocean server, you need to setup your Web directory (public_html) of holding the Web pages as well as setting the proper access permissions on your home directory. You can create your Web directory with WinSCP and set the proper access permissions.

To create your "public_html" directory on your Ocean account, hit F7 key and enter "public_html"

Create Directory

To set the permission to your file or folder, right click the file or folder and then select the Properties. You can also copy, duplicate, delete and rename the file or folder this way.

Transfer Files To and From Ocean

    1. Once connected to Ocean, WinSCP will present you with a window shown below. The window has two main panes. On the left, is a view of files on your computer. On the right is a view of files on the Ocean server.

    2. Use the drop down menu on the left to change to the correct local directory. WinSCP mimics the behavior of Windows Explorer, so just navigate around like you are accustomed to doing. Once we have found the appropriate local directory, we change to the correct directory (public_html) on Ocean.
    3. After changing to the correct directory on Ocean, we are ready to transfer files. To transfer files, simply drag the file/folder you wish to transfer from one pane to the other. Then the Copy window will appear. Click the Copy button at the bottom to transfer the file/folder.
